Information on how to care for Tandanus Catfish

Baby Tandanus Food

Baby Tandanus catfish eat a wide variety of dry and fresh foods. I have listed some foods that I have fed my baby tandanus’s and found they have grown big and strong. The following food items are suitable for baby tandanus based on their small size

Live/Frozen Bloodworms
Bloodworms are midge larvae and can be bought either live, frozen or freeze dried at your LFS. They are a great source of roughage and high in nutritious protein.
You can also purchase Black worms which are a species of Tubifex worm.

Brineshrimp
Brine shrimp are species of aquatic crustaceans that live in saltwater ponds and lakes, but not in oceans. They make an ideal aquarium food because they are high in lipids and unsaturated fatty acids.

Brine shrimp can be bought either live, frozen or freeze dried at your LFS. You can also purchase ‘Brine Shrimp Hatching Kits’ and hatch them yourself.

Brine shrimp are more famously known as ‘Sea Monkeys’

Pellets
The most important thing to remember when purchasing pellets is that you get what you pay for. A high quality premium pellet food is far better for your TC as it will contain a lot more nutrients than cheaper brands.

Shrimp pellets are the most common pellet food that Aquarium shops recommend for TC, however there are a variety of pellets foods on the market for carnivorous fish that you can choose from. If the pellets are the 'floating' type not 'sinking' type, it's recommended to soak them for a little bit so that they sink. The reason for this is that if your TC swallows dry pellet food, the pellets will tend to expand in their stomach, which can cause your TC to bloat or develop constipation.

All Baby Tandanus food listed here can also be fed to adolescent and adult tandanus

Adult Tandanus Food

Adult Tandanus can eat a variety of foods including:

Cooked Peas
Cooked peas are great to fed your Tandanus. I feed mine once a week. It helps him stay regular to prevent bloating and constipation.I cook mine in the microwave and then deshell them once they have cooled.

Live Crickets
You can purchase live crickets from any good aquarium store. The most common brand I have seen is Pisces Enterprises. They sell crickets in three different sizes:

Baby    10g
Small    50g
Medium 100g

To maintain crickets health you just need to add a piece of fresh carrot when needed. This gives the crickets a source of moisture and nutrients. If you purchase Pisces crickets, you just need to feed them the sachet of Gutload that comes with the crickets before feeding them to your fish.

Beef Heart
Raw beef heart is very rich in protein, minerals, vitamins and amino acids. It is also low in fat and cheap to buy. Preparation of Beef Heart involves cutting away the tough membranes, tissues and arteries (Be sure to trim off all the fat as fish are not able to digest fat). You then thinly slice the beef heart and put it in a food processor. Process meat until it becomes a course mince. You can than shape the mince in bite size cubes and freeze it. Alternatively if you are lazy like me, you can purchase beef heart already prepared.

Some aquarists recommend to fed to your fish beef heart sparingly, as it is not a food source found in their natural environment and may not be of benefit to your fish if feed in large amounts or as a sole food source.

There are some great Beef Heart recipes on the net for fish. Check out the following link on the Tandanus Forum for the links: Beef Heart Recipe Forum Post

Earth Worms

Live earth worms are a favorite amongst Tandanus Catfish and help keep your Tandanus regular. You can also purchase 'Earth Worm Flake food' which contains added nutrients and ingredients.

It is recommended that live earth worms are not to be feed as a staple food.
